December 2006

Bonus Earned by '06 Points Enrollees

The early adapters who enrolled horses in the Sweepstakes Points program for 2006 should be very happy since it's estimated that a whopping $30 per point will be awarded. "It was the intention of the Sweepstakes Commission to pay approximately $10 per point. The $30 for 2006 is an anomaly for this year's points' prize money recipients," says Commission Chair Dean Meier. Points' winners include competitors at every level of participation as well as distance riders. The Points prize money is an essential part of overall Sweepstakes earnings, so don’t miss out on this important component of the new Sweepstakes program. "We encourage all horse owners with active Sweepstakes horses to enroll horses in the points program for 2007. It's a great way to make competing pay off," says Meier. Be sure to check out the new FAQ about Sweepstakes by clicking here

Note: Sweepstakes prize money will be paid to the recorded owner of the horse as of December 31, 2006.

Horse Buying Scam Alert

People selling horses online may be receiving inquiries from a third party regarding the purchase of a horse from a potential buyer in another country. This inquiry commonly attempts to arrange the purchase of the horse with a counterfeit cashier's check covering the price of the horse and shipping. After the horse has been shipped, they ask you to refund the overpayment as part of a finder's fee, etc. This fact is not uncovered until the horse and the finder's fee have been forwarded to the scam artists.

To protect you and your horses, it is important to try and obtain as much information about the buyer as possible. If you suspect a buyer may be involved in this or similar scams, you can file a complaint with the United States Federal Trade Commission Consumer Complaint center here. In Canada, find scam information through the Royal Canadian Mounted Police site here.
