Great Clinics at AHYA Convention

The Arabian Professional and Amateur Horseman's Association (APAHA) is honored to host its 4th Annual Clinic in both reining and English disciplines on Saturday, July 28, from 2-5 p.m. in the Horse Arena at Expo New Mexico during Youth Nationals. Clinicians include Joel Kiesner, owner of Kiesner Training in Friendsville, Tenn, with English and Crystal McNutt of Scottsdale, Ariz., with featured guest Shawn Flarida of Springfield, Ohio on reining. This year's clinic is open to the general public and promises to offer some of the best training advice available within the entire equine community. Beat the Heat! Cool tips for hot weather.

Searing heat and sweltering humidity can be dangerous for horses. Every year, numerous cases of colic, dehydration, and respiratory distress are attributed to warmer summer weather. Worse yet, did you know that heat stroke and exhaustion can cause death in horses? Here are some helpful tips to help your horse beat the heat:
  • More Water Please: When temperatures are over 70º F a horse will drink an average of 25 gallons of water in a day. Keep buckets, tanks and troughs filled with fresh, cool clean water.
  • Yum Yum Gatorade: Replenish you horse's salt loss after workouts and excessive sweating with a suitable electrolyte supplement. Serious electrolyte loss can cause fatigue, muscle cramps, colic and more to your horse.
  • Made in the Shade: Offer an escape from the sun while your horse is turned out. A good porch, lean-to or shade tree hits the spot. Try to turn out in the early mornings before the sun reaches its peak.
  • Can I Get Some AC in Here: Cool your horse while he rests in the barn by leaving doors and windows open if possible. A box fan hung outside the stall can offer a great breeze and help control those pesky flies too.
  • A Run Through the Sprinklers: Sponging your horse down can help him stay cool. When you are filling up those water tanks, give your horses a little spray. Getting cool water on the inside of their legs, belly and chest can do wonders in the heat.
  • Don't Forget to Zinc: Apply zinc oxide and sunscreen to those pink noses to help prevent sunburns! What you use your horse can use. Spread it around!
