Have Hooves, Will Travel

Planning to take your horse somewhere? Your to-do list needs to include not only tack and feed, but also getting your horse's paperwork done. Whaaaat?!?! Yep, horses have to have documents showing they are 1) yours and 2) healthy. These rules help prevent both theft and the spread of disease. You'll need an adult to help you out, but you can get started by reading up on requirements. Click here.

Cool It With the Global Warming, Already!

These days, everyone is talking about Global Warming. While horses are an age-old part of the natural world, the modern-day way we keep and care for them could stand to be greened up.

Eco-Friendly Horsekeeping Tips
  • Close Shave: Turn out your horse lots and pick through his stall often, which helps you use less shavings (and save cash!). Also, check out green options like using shredded newspaper instead of wood shavings.
  • Turn over a New Leaf: Learn how to compost horse manure from your state extension agent. Did you know gardeners love that stuff for their flowerbeds???
  • One Fish, Two Fish: Add goldfish or minnows to your big waterers. Fish like to eat larvae that would otherwise turn into flies and mosquitoes, so you can use less fly spray.
  • Be Kind to Your Mother Earth: Add a recycle bin in your barn aisle for soda cans and plastic bottles.
  • Green-It's Not Just For Poop Stains Anymore: Choose biodegradable soaps for washing horses and blankets. They're gentler on your horse's sensitive skin and better for the environment.
  • All Aboard: Carpool to the barn. It's lots more fun and saves gas.
